Frank Lampard And Rio Ferdinand Team Up With West Ham Old Boys To Try To Bring World Cup To England
During the World Cup, fans from all over the country will put aside club rivalries to support the Fabio Capello's England team. Whichever team they support, England fans will no doubt acknowledge the contribution made by West Ham to England’s World Cup cause – past and present.
An interesting aspect of those hoping to represent England in South Africa is the number of players who share a connection to Upton Park. Eight players in England's 30-man provisional squad either started their careers at West Ham's academy or currently play for the East London club, including key players such as Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand. This group has amassed 287 caps between them.
In South Africa, this current generation of players will try to replicate the success of their West Ham predecessors in England's World cup winning side. Famously, it was Hammers Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters who provided all of the goals in England’s 4-2 victory over West Germany in 1966. At the back, Bobby Moore’s keen anticipation and ability to read the game helped ensure England had the most watertight defence in the tournament – not conceding a goal until Eusebio’s 82nd minute penalty in the semi-final.
The Hammers held a testimonial match in May for Tony Carr, the club's academy director, who has been on the club's coaching staff since 1973. Carr is a common link between the latest generation of talent and the Upton Park legends of 1966. He joined West Ham as a teenager in 1966, when Hurst, Moore and Peters were all in the first team and creating history with England. As director of the club's youth system, he has helped develop current England players such as Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Glen Johnson, Jermain Defoe, Michael Carrick and captain Rio Ferdinand.
This is an impressive contribution to the national cause for which all fans would be grateful should today’s crop achieve in South Africa as much as their West Ham predecessors did in 1966. We can all hope that in Rio Ferdinand, the trophy will again be held aloft by a London-born central defender who has worn the Hammers’ famous shirt with pride.
