College Hoops Suits Up For Veterans Day (Deadline Hollywood)
The first Carrier Classic tonight on ESPN (7 PM ET/4 PM PT) pits perennial
college basketball powers North Carolina and Michigan State in their season
opener -- to be played on the flight deck of the 1092-foot-long, 244-foot-high
active Navy aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson. It's docked at the San Diego
Naval Base. The game to celebrate the Veterans Day holiday and active-duty and
retired military features bleachers built on the flight deck that will seat
7000-plus fans, wind screens to keep shots on track and an emergency 2000-seat
court in the ship's hanger bay in case the weather turns (Southern California
is expecting rain this weekend). Here's how it all came together, via the U.S.
Navy; they even constructed the TV camera towers for the game after dark:
