IS AN APPLE A DAY ALL THAT IT TAKES ?

The health benefits of eating fresh fruit are well-documented.Just how much should we be eating ?
Health experts vary slightly on their opinions, but the general view is that around a third of an adult's daily food consumption should comprise fruit and veggies, which should also be eaten at each meal.
In the United Kingdom, the fruit and vegetable consumption of the average adult is around two to three serves per day, which is below the recommended five serves for good health.A federal government initiative in Australia is encouraging adults and children to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, as the average Aussie adult only eats between one and two portions of fruit a day.  Their campaign encourages healthy eating with two serves of fruit and five of vegetables each day.
Of course we know that fruit is good for us.Just why aren't we consuming more of it ?
Fruit is surprisingly nutritious and is an important source of vitamins including the vital vitamin C, minerals and fibre.  The main sugar in fruit is fructose which is absorbed slowly into the bloodstream, giving energy without the highs and lows that come with eating refined sugar.
You may want to think about this before you reach for the biscuit tin when the mid-morning sugar low hits. One of the world's leading organisations that helps people with weight issues, gives each different food a points value.Using their system, a small apple would be taken as 0.5 points while a choc chip cookie is a point and a bag of crisps is 5.5 points. And what about that double chocolate muffin. can you believe it - it's a whopping nine points.Similar sizes - but just look at the nutritional difference between the muffin and a crunchy apple !

Here are some pointers as to what constitutes one serving of fruit :
* One piece of medium sized fruit including apples, pears, bananas, oranges, mandarines
* A slice of melon (any type) or pineapple
• One handful of grapes
• One tablespoon of dried fruit
* About a cup of chopped or tinned fruit
And before you reach for a cup of apple juice, remember that it will contain around 115 calories as opposed to a medium apple which is only around 80 calories.Eating the whole fruit is far more satisfying, and obviously healthier too.  It’s also worth remembering that since fruits lose water when dried, their sugar content becomes more concentrated. So a handful of dried raisins is way more calories than a handful of fresh grapes.
With the health and wellbeing of the workforce becoming increasingly important, employees are taking proactive steps to improve productivity and lift morale. One of the increasingly popular ways of doing this is to have a fresh fruit delivery made to the office on a regular basis, so that staff have their fruit fill on tap.
Perth fruit box delivery company, Fruit Boost, has been delivering carefully selected seasonal fruit direct from the farmers’ markets to offices for many years, and says their fruit-eating clients are in better health thanks to the on-tap goodness.
There's much truth in the old saying that an apple a day will keep the doctor away, so a regular fruit basket delivery will do wonders for keeping employees away from the sickbay and at their workstations.
