What links Dutch (people and language), Netherlands (country) and Holland (soccer team)?

Why are the language and people known as Dutch, the country is called Netherlands and the soccer team is Holland? Is there something that links these three terms or have they have been derived from separate historical sources?

Well, I´ll start with the first one.
Dutch in Dutch itself is `Nederlands`. The people are referred to as `Nederlanders` (Dutchmen), The English term Dutch derives from the Old Dutch word `Dietsch`, which meant the language spoken by the common germanic people, and later on especially in the Netherlands area. This is different from and should not be confused with Deutsch, which is German. Though Dietsch and Deutsch have the same root, they don´t mean the same thing. Dutch language in Belgium is sometimes referred to as Flemish as well, this is actually only a group of dialects.
The Netherlands are just the official name of the country. Nederland litterally means `low country` (compare French: Pays-Bas). The name Holland, however, is sometimes used to refer to the Netherlands as well. Holland is actually only a region (though in earlier times the most powerful one) of the Netherlands, currently the two provinces Noord (North) and Zuid (South) Holland. The soccer team is probably called "Holland" because the word Holland will sound familiar to more people, but officially it should be "Nederland" or The Netherlands.
Hope this helps!
