The Stadium Can Make the Game
Going to an NFL game is an experience that every football fan should have. What type of experience it ends up being, however, depends on the stadium. To illustrate the point, here are two very different examples. When I was about twenty years old, my father took me to a Green Bay Packers game at Lambeau Field. As we approached the stadium, there were people gathering in the parking lot to tailgate. People you've never met would become your friends almost instantly, if you wore the right colors. My dad and I were offered brats and beers by about twenty different people. All in all, it was a fun atmosphere. We went inside and found our seats. The Packers were playing the Minnesota Vikings that day, which is one of the fiercest rivalries in the NFL. About four rows in front of us was a Vikings fan, decked out in all his purple glory, complete with horns. Even before the game started, there was good-natured ribbing between him and the Packers fans surrounding him.
When the game started, the fun really began. If the Vikings made a good play, he would jump up and dance, shaking his booty with joy. Everyone around him would tell him to sit down, and both sides enjoyed the banter. When the Packers made a good play, he was at risk of losing his hearing from all the cheering. At the end of the game, everyone shook hands and laughed together. That day remains one of my favorite memories. Ten years later, I decided to surprise my husband with a trip to Oakland and tickets to watch his beloved Raiders play at home against the Giants. I even wore a Raiders jersey in the spirit of the day. We arrived at the stadium and were immediately searched. We decided to walk around and look at the place before heading to our seats. Everywhere we went, people were drinking and swearing. It was definitely what youd call a rough crowd. We decided to look for the seats we had and prepare for the game. The majority of fans all around were either drunk, threatening, or outright rude to those displaying Giants jerseys. When the people next to us started smoking in violation of the stadium rules, we asked them to stop since I was six months pregnant and it made me sick. They responded rather rudely, to be polite.
At halftime, we decided to change seats. While walking through the stadium, there was a very tense mood in the stadium. It almost felt like a fight was going to ensue at any moment. We decided to seat in the nosebleed section, since it wouldnt be as crowded. We enjoyed the rest of the game sitting downwind from a group of marijuana smokers who kept growling at each other. When we left, my hubby said that he enjoyed the experience but the only way he would go to another home game is if we had box seats. So, when venturing forth to experience an NFL game live, keep this in mind: not all NFL experiences are the same. Simply put, its all in the stadium. Before we left, though, we bought dog football jerseys for our black Labrador. He loves to show off his jersey in front of his furry friends, who like to flaunt a Saints dog jersey just to get to him!
