The Intelligent African Grey Parrot

The African Grey parrot is probably one of the most beautiful and easiest parrots to keep in captivity. These parrots are from Central Africa, they are very intelligent and are well known for their cognitive and talking abilities. African Greys and known to develop a very large vocabulary, and unusually communicate extremely well with their owners.

These birds are medium-sized normally growing to about 10 to 14 inches. There are only two types of African Grey parrots. There is a Congo African Grey, which is light Grey and has a red tail. The Timneh African Grey is a darker charcoal Grey with a maroon tail. Generally the males are larger than the females. The males are generally 12 to 14 inches in length. Both sexes actually look the same, however, the female African Grey parrot usually has a more slender neck and narrower head.

These parrots can live a long time so therefore need long-term commitment from their owners. African Greys can live as long as 60 years. Because of their high intelligence, African Greys require an owner that is experienced and who can understand their needs. They need to be stimulated and be in an interactive environment or they will become bored. African Greys may turn their boredom into behavioral problems such as feather plucking if their intellectual needs are not met.

Since they are so sensitive this can lead to behavioral problems. Even small changes in their daily routine and surroundings can lead to an African Grey parrot to be coming bad tempered and frustrated. In the most part these birds are typically well behaved and great pets, however there can be challenges. Undisciplined African Greys can get into some trouble. They might chew something or bite. They can quickly pick up behaviors therefore if you unintentionally show them bad habits, it will be just as easy to reinforce good ones.

African Grey parrot's are fantastic birds, who are very sociable and make great pets. They will typically flock together in the wild. An African Grey parrot living in a home environment will usually adopt the family into their flock. There has been reports of them actually cuddling family members. They seem to enjoy head scratching and petting, even though they don't always enjoy physical contact. Most experienced African Grey owners are not bothered bythe birds very strange signs of affection.

A deep sign of affection for an African Grey is regurgitation, and they will even try to kiss their owners on the mouth. Because the human mouth contains bacteria it is not recommended that the bird kisses you. The birds really do need companionship, and owners should realize the importance of understanding this.

African Grey parrots have great personalities and human like qualities to.Those of us who are fortunate enough to own one will be able to see an intelligence that not many other animals can equal.

Harlequin Tusk?

My Harlequin Tusk died today for no apparent reason. Are these hard to keep fish? I had him for a good two weeks and he was eating fine. Could my long tentacle anenome have stung him? He is in a 120 fish only tank with eco system. Everyone else is fine. Naso Tang, Baby Humu, Large Dragon Wrasse, Male and Female Birdwrasse, Large Maroon Tang, Foxface, Sailfin Tang and three Chromis.

It could be strychnine poisoning. It is used in the capture of marine fish and it messes with there intestines. They can survive for several weeks and eat and act fine then one day they are dead. I have had it happen to some of the saltwater fish that I have purchased. I picked my vets (who is an exotics vet) brains about it and he said that is the most likely cause of the fishes demise. You can read up on it on the internet. Harlequin Tusk fish are one of my favorite., but my 80 gallon just isn't big enough for one.

There’s no better season for your family to start eating more healthy vegetables (Denver Post)

Aim to be different from the average American, who eats only two servings of
vegetables a day — and counts French fries as a vegetable (they really don't
count). Fall is a great time to fill at least a quarter of your plate — the
recommended servings — with fresh, colorful, tasty vegetables. Broccoli,
Brussels sprouts, [...]
