Two Years Of Delay For Greener Power At New York Docks
We naturally associate the New York city skyline with the cruise liner. It's New York we imagine behind the rather romantic imagery of travellers being waved off by on-shore loved ones. But despite the nostalgic images they conjure, the sad truth is that Cruise ships can cause quite a stink in local neighbourhoods. But it isn't the cruise lines that are entirely to blame for this. In fact, many of them are equipped for greener practices than three passenger terminals allow, even infrequent visitors like Regent Cruises 2011. Two years ago it was decided that shore-side power generation should be implemented at Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, Red Hook. As it was (and irritatingly, still is), cruise ships had to run their own power generation on their heavy diesel fuels. Burning such fuel supposedly releases the same pollutants as ten thousand idling cars. But construction of the power facility isn't an issue for either side: they're in a deadlock over how it should be maintained and operated.
The benefit to everyone is readily apparent: running fuel in dock is getting more and more expensive for the cruise lines, and the pollution is a genuine problem. And the benefit to the wider City could be significant were the other terminals to follow suit. The Cape Liberty Cruise Port, for instance, with visiting lines like Azamara cruises among others, doubtlessly causes issues for New Jersey. But the $1.2 million dollar a year price tag has to be footed by somebody, and word is, it could be the taxpayer. Cruise tourism is completely invaluable to New York City, with some estimates that it is worth $1 billion a year. Positively, the port authority has already raised the $15 million that will be need to actually construct the new infrastructure.
Whilst the back and forth continues between big businesses and big governments, the local residents are actively protesting. But among the protesters, the mood is quite clear: who pays isn't a problem, someone just needs to get on with it all. Cunard cruises sail the Queen Mary 2 from Red Hook. Though local residents often specifically complain about this behemoth, it is actually already equipped for using any onshore power facility.
How often do the Miami Heat wear their red alternate jersey?
I just bought an authentic red LBJ jersey online and was was wondering how often they wear that jersey. I know that it's their alternate and not their home or away jersey. Do they wear it a lot?
